Nissan Teamed With NEC Corp. To Design Batteries of the Future» Science, Technology and Internet [Dec 22, 2006] |
The famous Japanese car producer Nissan Motor Co. stated that it is about to create a partnership with NEC Corp. in order to produce lithium ion batteries. The latter are to be used in cars with a hybrid engine as well as those with a fuel cell.
The spokesman of the Japanese car producer, Haruko Wada, stated that Nissan is still involved in the negotiation process and it looks forward to develop, produce and sale batteries, but at the same time it is still not clear whether the company will elaborate the project further.
Nissan, being the second largest car producer in Japan, is going to create a joint venture in 2007 and the aim of the venture will be the mass production of the lithium ion batteries. The production is to start in 2010.
There are rumors that the new joint venture has an additional goal of surpassing their main competitor, which is another team consisted of Toyota Motor Co. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co.
Nissan, together with NEC, plan to produce batteries that are small and at the same time highly effective. They hope to bring this new technology to a global level, thus making it one of the most popular in the world.
The two companies are going to build a specialized factory by 2010 and later market their products not only in Japan but sell batteries to foreign companies as well. The creation of the factory will cost about 84.4 million US dollars.
Because the new joint venture is going to market its products mainly outside of Japan the share of Nissan will probably be less than 50 percent. At the same time Nissan looks forward to creating some hybrid cars on its own, thus catching up with the Japanese largest producers in this field: Toyota and Honda.
